In conjunction with the American Lung Association of Washington’s Master Home Environmentalist© Program’s CLEARCorps of Washington recruits and trains its members to conduct in-home air quality assessments which utilize the Home Environmental Assessment List© (HEAL©). The corpsmembers use the HEAL to guide them through the process of identifying issues such as asthma and allergy triggers, lead, asbestos, mold, et cetera that are specific to the resident’s home then recommend low-cost and no-cost solutions to identified problems. Corpsmembers are intimately involved in all aspects of the Master Home Environmentalist© Program, training volunteers in indoor air quality issues, performing home assessments, entering resident’s information into the database, tracking volunteer activities and hours, answering environmental health questions from the public, updating fact sheets, attending health fairs and making presentations.

The Achievement Gap is a social justice issue. Research demonstrates that if a child cannot read well by the end of third grade his or her chances for academic success is significantly diminished. Through the Washington Reading Corps, AmeriCorps members provide direct daily tutoring and full-time VISTA members help school communities to harness the talent and energies of parents and community members as volunteer tutors. Last school year WRC schools statewide recruited more than 11,000 volunteers who tutored over 25,000 students, contributing to impressive gains in statewide reading tests. WRC Members of all ages gain experience in direct tutoring, volunteer management, and strengthening community. WRC Members also develop their own leadership skills by participating in team trainings and state-wide Member Development Institutes, as well as by leading local service projects.
